5) Title:

Στης Πέτρας τη Σιωπή -- Stis petras ti siopi

In the Silence of the Rocks

This book gives an accurate account of the environment that the author George N. Kanakis lived in and the experiences that shaped him for the rest of his life in Olymbos.
Approximately half of this book includes poems about the life of the past, present, and the future as seen through the eyes of the author. The second half of the book includes stories that took place around and in Olymbos and Diafani which have been told to and recorded by the author.
Without altering the meaning or the principles of the stories, the author carefully added his own humor that makes reading of these stories enjoyable. Also included are some breathtaking photographs, a glossary of the Olymbitic dialect words used in the book, and a table of contents.
It has been reviewed and forworded by two prominent scholars that Olymbos is proud of; Mr. Konstantinos Minas, Professor of Aegean University (Linguistics) and Dr. Sofia N. Kanaki, Professor in Athens University (Philosophy). A highly recommended reading for anyone wanting to know about Olymbos. Unfortunately, it has only been published in the Greek language.

6) Title:  A Greek Portfolio; published September 1999 by Constantine Manos
First published in 1972, A Greek Portfolio is a collection of photographs made in isolated areas or rural Greece. A very significant portion (±25%) of those photographs came from Olymbos between 1961 and 1964, however the book represents rural life around the whole country. Giving credit to the people of Olymbos in his prologue, Mr. Manos writes "A particular debt of gratitude goes to the people of the village of Olympos, Karpathos, whose traditional village life provided so many photographs for the book". It is a great-great publication, a collector's classic, and we strongly suggest it. The photographer is world-known with high credentials. A Greek edition has also been published by APEIRON under the auspices of Benaki Museum, Athens, and Aegean Ministry of Greece. It can be found at Amazon.com.

7) Title:  Tales from a Greek Island ; published 2005 by Roger Jinkinson
Tales from a Greek Island-Book Cover A former UK university lecturer, Roger Jinkinson has written a book of short stories aptly titled “Tales from a Greek Island” (Racing House, UK). They are the kind of stories you would hear at the kafeneion: village stories, of fishing, of beekeeping, of the winds and weather and legends of times past. The majority are Jinkinson’s own experience, but some are interwoven with the hearsay and history of both the locals and the island. Each tale is just a few pages — none longer than 10 — but each is complete with a point, moral or message. That sounds a bit trite, but the stories are not; there’s death and laughter in the lines... and Jinkinson’s poetry in how he weaves a tale. (Excerpt from e-kathimerini's article by Laura McDowell). Description:

(By the book author)

Scattered in Foreign Lands Book Cover

Α story of the people of Olymbos (or Elymbos as it is called locally), both on the island of Karpathos and in Baltimore, told through their rich traditions of oral and material culture. Many individuals and families in Olymbos and Baltimore welcomed me into their homes, shared with me their vast knowledge of Olymbos' traditional culture, and became my guides to their communities. Some, as personal friends, entrusted me with private moments of their lives. All shared a common passion for their heritage and its perpetuation. We hope that this exhibition and catalogue contribute, in some small way, to an accurate portrayal of what Olymbites see as their most vital and precious expressions.
